Never in Lebanon's modern history has a cabinet change touched off wide-scale reactions and government concerns in the world as the collapse of the Western-backed government of caretaker Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri did. Since Hariri's national unity cabinet was brought down with the resignations of the ministers of the powerful Shiite Hizbullah group and its allies in the Syrian-backed March 8 coalition on Jan. 12, there have been a volley of statements by officials in the United States and its Western allies and Israel sharply criticizing Hizbullah and blaming it for throwing Lebanon into further political turmoil. The ministers' resignations came amid a long-running dispute over the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), which is probing the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. The STL's indictment is widely expected to implicate some Hizbullah members in Hariri's assassination, raising fears of sectarian violence. When a Hizbullah-backed candidate, former Prime Minister Najib Mikati, a Sunni politician known for his moderate and centrist policies, looked set to clinch the prime minister's post from Hariri, these countries have issued warnings about the dire consequences of the formation of a Hizbullah-led government in Lebanon. Billionaire Mikati, a telecoms tycoon with close ties to Syria, was officially designated by President Michel Suleiman to form a new cabinet on Jan. 25 after winning the votes of 68 lawmakers against 60 for Hariri in the 128-member Parliament following two days of mandatory consultations held by Suleiman with the MPs.
